Irion Books Releases Fifth Book in the Summit Murder Mystery Series
Murder on Aconcagua
Today Irion Books announces the much anticipated release of the fifth book in their Summit Murder Mystery Series, Murder on Aconcagua. One of the most unique series ever written, the Summit Murder Mystery Series is co-authored by Charles G. Irion and Ronald J. Watkins, and is set at the peaks of the highest mountains on the world’s seven continents.Remote, inaccessible, they are the crown jewels of climbing. They are the world’s deadliest mountains, and deaths from falls, avalanches, illness, heart attacks, and high altitude sickness, are a matter of course. Add in murder to the mix, and you get seven of the most original and exciting murder mysteries ever written.
Inspired by Charles Irion’s 1987 attempt to climb Mt. Everest, and his 2011 climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, each book offers the story of a little known region of the world. The authors promise you will encounter bizarre customs, ancient taboos, political intrigue, and ethnic conflicts, and Murder on Aconcagua is no exception.
In Murder on Aconcagua, Irion says, “Our hero not only battles the brutal elements of the Aconcagua summit, but the determined greed of a murderer.”The book’s synopsis tells us that hero Scott Devlon is once again sent by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency on another climbing expedition. This time the mountain is Aconcagua, the highest in South America. His mission is to confirm a report that three Inca golden idols have been discovered and are headed to Venezuelan strongman, Hugo Chavez. Legend says he who possesses them is invincible. Scott’s assignment is to prevent that from taking place but he quickly learns that there are those who will stop at nothing, including murder, to get their hands on the idols.

The contest, which will run until March 1, 2012, asks participants to choose between two possible cover images for the final book Murder On Kilimanjaro. Irion says, "We can't decide which cover deserves the unique distinction of finishing the series of seven. Through this contest, we want to get feedback from the people whose opinions truly matter ... our readers!"
Readers who vote on a cover option will be entered into a contest to win a full set of all seven books in the Summit Murder Mystery series! To enter the contest, readers are asked to go to the Summit Murder Mystery Series blog at http://summitmurderseries.blogspot.com/ and fill out the provided form selecting which cover image they think best captures Mount Kilimanjaro, one the amazing seven summits. At the end of the contest, the cover with the most votes will be chosen, and a winner will be contacted via email.
The seventh and final book, Murder On Kilimanjaro will be what Irion promises is the "crown jewel of our Summit Murder Mystery series. We are very excited about this book. It will be full of non-stop action and tie the entire series together."
In order to do research for the plot of Murder On Kilimanjaro, Irion actually climbed the mighty mountain himself in June 2011. When asking Irion what the plot contains, he laughs and says, "We are rescuing the President of the United States. Our hero Scott Devlon will be helping the President get off the mountain after his son is murdered." With the release of the book due just prior to the Presidential Election next year, it is sure to be an unforgettable ending to an already amazing series.
The book that started it all is Murder On Everest, which finds the series' hero Scott Devlon returning to the mountain to retrieve the body of a friend, Derek Sodoc, who died during their initial summit attempt. Sodoc's influential Father is convinced Derek didn't die from the elements and hopes by sending the same team back up to retrieve Derek's body, the truth of what really happened will be revealed. Each book in the series takes place on one of the world's seven continental summits, and includes climbing drama, mystery, murder and intrigue.

The locals claimed that Aconcagua was haunted. Locals everywhere, in every culture in my experience, always reported the tallest mountain in the region as haunted. And in my many ascents, I'd seen and witnessed countless bizarre sights, heard more than my portion of strange sounds. But this one sends a shiver down my spine.
As suddenly as they started, the clicks stopped. I strained every faculty, waiting for them to resume. At last, exhausted, I fell into a restless slumber.
Later, much later it seemed but it might have only been a few minutes I was awakened.
Click... Click... Click.
The sound had returned, but now it was just beyond the tissue of nylon that separated me from it.
Murder on Puncak Jaya
Adventurer Scott Devlon is out to climb Puncak Jaya, one of the world's Seven Summits. Located between the Himalayas and Andes, Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in Oceania. Situated in the heart of primitive New Guinea, Puncak Jaya is one of the most forbidding regions on earth, home to cannibals and headhunters. In this isolated land, Devlon begins by slashing his way through a primordial jungle teaming with exotic and deadly wildlife. His journey takes him to the icy precipice of Puncak Jaya - only to find murder. Harrowing chases, rogue gold miners, prehistoric tribal rites converge to deliver non-stop adventure and a breathtaking climax atop the Pacific Rim. Murder on Puncak Jaya is like no other action book and is the fourth thrilling saga in the Summit Murder Mystery Series.

We followed no trail. There was no sense of direction, no goal other than escape. Someone was in front, blindly fleeing; the rest of us followed, stumbling, falling, getting back up and running again. The light rain suddenly turned into a downpour engulfing us and great sweeping sheets. The jungle floor turned even more treacherous. Sandy slipped, fell hard, struggled to get up. I stopped and lifted her. There was blood across her body, bits and pieces of gray matter still stubbornly splattered on her face. I yanked her arm to urge her on. "This way."
We ran. Arrows rained down again and behind us I heard a terrible war cry; a sound primordial and frightening. I spun and emptied the weapon at darting shadows, dropping it as I turned to run.
Murder on Mt. McKinley
Once again Scott Devlon is thrust into the middle of a murder mystery atop one of the world's Seven Summits. In Murder on Mt. McKinley, the chief executives of two rival oil companies attempting to construct a new Alaska pipeline opt to merge their efforts, and reap billions in profits. During the process, in celebration, they decide to climb Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. What they don't expect are deaths. But they have enemies at every turn and one by one, that's what begins to happen. Can they all be accidents? Competitors, Russians, Native American cultists, and environmental extremists, all have motives. But would any of them stoop to murder to stop the development of another oil field in Alaska? Or are the executives knocking each other off? As the climbing team descends from the summit engulfed by a violent lightning storm it becomes clear that murder is exactly what is occurring. The Summit Murder Mystery Series explores murders set on each of the Seven Summits, the highest and deadliest mountains on the world's seven continents. Join authors Charles G. Irion and Ronald J. The very ease with which the climb was perceived led to so many deaths as was the case with Elbrus. In the 11 days since we've been at this, the trek had been across wide plains of fresh snow or along narrow ridges, neither of which was more than moderately inclined. But now we were at the end and the route was beginning to rise sharply. With the cloud and cold that numbed gloved hands, we'd reached the most dangerous time.
From my experience most of those on the team would not understand that. They were tired, even exhausted. The goal was all but in sight. The tendency was to banish any negative thoughts as well as genuine concerns from your mind and press on. None of them would be considering the reality that once we reached the summit we were only half done. We still had to get down alive and uninjured.
Stern was making good time, too good, and I found it difficult to catch up with him. The route was taking us along a traverse. The mountain rose sharply to my right, very steeply down the glacier to my left. Such places can be quite treacherous. There was nowhere I could reach and talk to him safely so I decided to wait until after the next point when I need to disconnect and reconnect.
That spot was about 10 feet away when Stern was suddenly engulfed in a sea of white and vanished. Without warning the falling while enveloped me, shutting out the light as it swept me away. There was no time to shout, no time to react. I found myself plunging into thin air, trapped in the deadly embrace of an avalanche.
Abandoned on Everest
Abandoned on Everest written by tabloid reporter, Quentin Stern, is the prequel to Murder on Everest. Stern reveals the inside story of the Mt. Everest expedition including sexual misdeeds, sabotage and media manipulation, all of which leads to Derek Sodoc's tragic death.
When Derek Sodoc, only son of the world's richest and most powerful man dies attempting to climb Mt. Everest, questions are raised. Was it the mountain? Or perhaps something more sinister.
After reading the book Abandoned on Everest that details Derek Sodoc's untimely death, Sodoc's father convinces the surviving expedition members to return to Everest - presumably to recover Derek's body. With billions at stake and a relentless father searching for someone to blame, everyone is a suspect.
Set against the backdrop of the world's highest and deadliest mountain, Murder on Everest is filled with intrigue, sex, betrayal, murder and mystery. It is unlike any murder mystery you've ever read.

“What’s going on?” I asked Tom.
“That Sherpa woman is in trouble.”
“Laki?”
“That’s the one. I saw her for a moment. Horrible. Her eyes were all bugged out. Cal tried a shot of dexamethazone, but it doesn’t seem to be working.”
Dexamethazone was the drug of last resort in such a situation. It was an anti-inflammatory steroid that in certain situations was a lifesaver. That it wasn’t working was very bad news.
I went into the clinic. Calvin was still arguing with Harlan, who was making no attempt to explain himself. Laki lay nearby and looked dreadful. To see a snapshot of someone suffering from HACE with edema, you cannot imagine what you are actually looking at. Such a photo might even look funny, with the eyes bugging out in an unnatural way. What was taking place was that her brain was swelling, and there was nowhere for it to go except through the openings that held her eyes.
Laki was panting like a dog in summer. Her face was gaunt. She looked at me for help and I had none to give. She knew she was in trouble and was very, very frightened. You didn’t have to be a doctor to know that she was at the end of her rope.
Tom joined me. He glanced at her, grimaced, then turned to me. “Calvin said she’s got to be carried down now. The shot doesn’t seem to be helping. Harlan told him that the woman is already dead and he won’t risk the Sherpa in the dark.”
Harlan was right. A few minutes later, Laki stopped breathing. Calvin worked to revive her, but it was hopeless. He finally gave up and stalked off as angry as I’ve ever seen him. The Sherpa who had been nearby, moved away, not wishing to come in contact with her ghost. Someone pulled a blanket over the woman’s face, frozen in horror.
